Unites Stated lost word-beater rank in supercomputers facilities
The Top500 list is comprised of 500 countries with most powerful computational systems. According to the newest data, just six months ago, the USA was an unhesitating leader in the list by having 169 supercomputers on its territory. At that time, China had ten supercomputers less. However, in the last half-year, Beijing has managed to increase the computational power, and it possesses now 202 supercomputers, while the USA has only 144 machines at disposal.
Moreover, China owns two most powerful computers from the Top500. One of them is situated at the China’s National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi. This machine can afford quadrillion calculations per minute. The second one with the power by about three times less than the first machine is located at National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou.
For their functioning, supercomputers are using thousands of processors and can occupy whole buildings. They are applied to the tasks which require numerical modeling and treating large databases in the real-time regime. The application range includes, for example, forecasting weather and climate conditions, modeling nuclear-weapon tests, designs of airplanes, and exploring outer cosmic space.
