Two white bears on Franz-Josef-Land got satellite neck straps

The employees from the National Park «Russian Arctic» and the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution Problems in the course of the expedition to the island Alexandra Land from archipelago Franz-Josef-Land have managed to immobilize two female white bears and put on the animals neck straps with satellite transmitters. This achievement is reported by the press office of the Barents-division of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) which supports the expedition.

The task of the scientists is to study the state of white bears from Karsk-Barents population. This work is a continuation of the program of monitoring white bears in the West part of Franz-Josef-Land initiated in 2010.

The research group is stationed at Alexandra Land. Using snowmobiles, the researchers have inspected almost all territory free of the glacier and have found four bears lairs. In two of them, they have discovered female bears with bear cubs, while two caves have been abandoned. Moreover, in the course of investigations in bays of the island, the specialists have noticed on the ice footprints of other female bears with bear cubs, and also adult male bears and single female bears.
