Tobolsk scientists have found a way to fight spreading of sand in tundra of the Yamal Peninsula

Scientists at the Tobolsk Scientific Station (Tyumen Region) of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences proposed a new method for remediation of sandy areas in the tundra of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District (YNAO). It is based on the assumption that mass planting of local fast-growing plants with developed root system will help to stop the spread of sand blasts and remediate the land.

The sand carried by the wind falls into rivers, and that harms not only terrestrial ecosystems, but the entire catchment basin. Due to the spreading of sand, natural pastures used by deer are getting smaller, and wildlife reserves lose their attractiveness and environmental value.

In order to strengthen the soil, scientists suggested planting a combination of several types of willows and perennial grasses.
