The largest magnetic storm of 2018 have been registered on Earth

The largest magnetic storm of the year so far was registered on the night of 18 to 19 March 2018. The amplitude of oscillations of the Earth’s magnetic field reached the second point out of the maximum of five (G2 on the NOAA’s G-scale). Events of this scale have not yet been observed in the current year. A report on this was published on the website of the Laboratory of Solar X-ray Astronomy of P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LPI).

Storm of class 2 can cause interference in the broadcasting of HF radio stations and affect space vehicles which could lead to the orbital shift. The aurora can be seen up to a latitude of 50 degrees.

Generally unstable geomagnetic situation on Earth will be observed for the next several days, until March 24−25.

Four magnetic storms have been registered on Earth in the past 2.5 months of 2018, — one in January and three in February, — all of which belonged to the class 1, i.e. G1 on the G-scale.
