«Substance of Parkinson disease» essential for evolution of invaded neurons

Researchers from the Institute of Physiologically Active Substances at Russian Academy of Science (Chernogolovka, Moscow Region), Pirogov Russian State Medical University, and Research and Investigation Institute of General Pathology and Pathophysiology have ascertained that the «switch off» of production of alpha-synuclein, the protein forming plaques in neurons during Parkinson disease, influences the formation of dopaminergic neurons (disengaging dopamine) of embryos.

The results of the study with mice have shown that the protein of alpha-synuclein is essential for the well-timed appearance of dopaminergic neurons of substantia negra of midbrain which is exactly the part where the cells most of all suffer from an accumulation of Lewy bodies inside them in case of Parkinson disease. However, for some unknown reasons, alpha-synuclein does not affect the formation of cells releasing dopamine in the neighborhood zone of the midbrain, ventral tegmental area, involved in other physiological processes than substantia negra. The reasons for such difference should be clarified in further studies.
