Scientists study the microstructure of frozen rocks in the Arctic

Scientists of Tyumen Industrial University (TIU, Tyumen) and Moscow State University named after Lomonosov (MSU) will begin in 2018 studying the microstructure of frozen rocks in the Gydan Peninsula (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District). The project will make it possible to determine levels of saturation of rocks and underground ice with gas.

«We hope that the results will help to find out the levels of gas saturation of the frozen rocks and underground ice in the Gydan Peninsula, to establish a mechanism of gas migration and conditions of permeability of permafrost. The problem of the existence of gas hydrates in frozen layers has been debated a lot, the issue is serious enough and it pertains to, first of all, safety of wells and mining operations,» said Anna Kurchatova, an assistant professor at the Department of Cryology of the Earth at TIU.
