«The purpose of the space experiment 'Convergence' is to study the mechanisms of genesis and evolution of large-scale crisis atmospheric processes such as tropical cyclones and mid-latitude hurricanes,» the message said.

The research during the experiment will include round-the-clock detection of lightning flashes, determination of energy, spatial, and temporal characteristics of lightning flashes, identification of zones of thunderstorm activity, detection of gamma-ray bursts of terrestrial origin, and determination of their connection with thunderstorm activity in the atmosphere.
