Tomsk scientists have developed a way to preserve the strength of zirconium ceramics

Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University have found a way of processing zirconium ceramics which doesn’t affect its strength, said Sergey Gyngazov, a leading researcher at the Research School of High Energy Physics of TPU. The scientists published recommendations for the processing of ground ceramic products in the journal Ceramics International, with the grant support from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Zirconia ceramics can lose some of its strength after grinding. «The grinding of products is used, for example, in dentistry, where zirconium ceramics is widely used for prosthetics. Grinding can alter the crystal lattice of the ceramic material, thus reducing the strength of the latter. We proposed a simple and cheap way to avoid this negative effect — heating to 1000 degrees for 30 minutes», said Gyngazov.
