Tyumen scientists proposed creating storage facilities in the Arctic that use underground cold

Tyumen scientists suggested creating innovative cooling systems in the Arctic that can combine natural and artificial cooling methods at industrial facilities. The possibilities of creating such systems are studied at Tyumen State University (TSU), the press service of the university reported, citing Roman Fedorov, researcher at the International Institute of Cryology and Cryosophy of Tyumen State University.

According to the scientist, national science has not yet studied the ways of using the natural cold in traditional economic activities of different peoples of the world. Meanwhile storages which make use of permafrost can be economically efficient to a significant degree.

There is already a growing interest in using natural cryogenic resources as industrial coolers in the world, Fedorov pointed out. «This is due to the fact that expensive tariffs for electricity consumed by freezing equipment are an important factor that increases the cost of food production. Environmental problems associated with the use of Freon coolers are obvious as well, and therefore the study of peoples practices is once again relevant,» said Fedorov.
