Siberian scientists created a more capacious type of sorbent for storing methane

Scientists from the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (Novosibirsk) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with colleagues from Manchester University have developed a new type of porous compounds that have a higher capacity for methane and thus allow to reduce the weight and density of equipment in which the gas will be stored. Daniil Kolokolov, one of the authors of the study and a research fellow at the Institute, said that on Tuesday.

«We faced the challenge of efficiently storing and purifying methane for industrial needs and cars. It is a very volatile gas, so its liquefaction is a particularly energy-intensive process, and moreover, when liquefied, it needs to be stored in a heavy and thick container, with a pressure of about 140 Atmospheres. The adsorbent that we developed allows to increase the storage capacity for methane, which can then be transported by means of lighter and more compact equipment, where the pressure will not exceed 65 atmospheres,» Kolokolov said.
