Siberian mathematicians have created new software to search for oil in the Arctic

The mathematicians of the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have created software of a new generation for the processing of hydrocarbon reserves exploration data on the Arctic shelf and in the sea, said Alexei Vostretsov, vice-rector of the NSTU. The software has no counterparts in Russia and it may be used both for modelling and for processing real data.

«The new generation of the software which makes use of high-resolution methods for processing geological prospecting data has been developed at the Department of Applied Mathematics at the NSTU. The work is aimed at solving the strategic task of searching and exploring hydrocarbon reserves on the Arctic shelf and in the sea through the creation and subsequent introduction of 'smart' geological exploration technologies. It will significantly improve the accuracy of the geological forecast and the determination of the locations of future wells sites,» said Vostretsov.

The software product is meant to be used not only to search for oil, but also to detect any major objects which are sunk or frozen in ice, explained the pro-rector.
