Tomsk scientists create a device to accurately stimulate sensations in virtual reality

Scientists from Tomsk State University (TSU) are developing a device that operates on the basis of electrical-tactile stimulation technology, which can stimulate human sensations during immersion into virtual reality more accurately than other similar apparatuses. The device may be in demand in robotics and the gaming industry, said Sergei Pobachenko, one of the authors of the study, an associate professor at the Department of Space Physics and Ecology of TSU.

«While in similar devices vibration mechanisms are used to recreate sensations in virtual reality, our device uses electrodes to stimulate muscle contraction. These signals affect the nerve endings more accurately and form patterns of neuronal activity that cause a whole range of sensations: from a light touch to pain,» said Pobachenko.

The invention will be suitable not just in games, but also for interaction with robots, transferring «sensations» of the robot to the person.
