St. Petersburg scientists found a way to increase the efficacy of antibiotics

Scientists at the St. Petersburg State University (SPbU) have developed a natural peptide complex, which makes it possible to potentiate the effect of antibiotics, the university press service informed.

The substance in question is peptide complex FLIP7 of fly larva, which affects the causative agents of human infectious diseases. «The results of the studies showed that FLIP7 significantly strengthens the effect of antibiotics,» the message said.

«We consider the peptide complex not only and not so much as an independent new antibiotic, but as a synergist that increases the efficacy of synthetic substances. This approach will make the new drug affordable and reduce the likelihood of side effects of the use of 'classic' antibiotics by reducing their efficacious concentration», explained Andrei Yakovlev, researcher at the Department of Entomology of St. Petersburg State University.

Combined expedition will help find causes of death of dolphins of the Black Sea

Scientists are alarmed by decline in the number of Black Sea dolphins. They name pollution of the sea, numerous cases of deaths of animals in fishing nets, and a lack of food supply among the possible reasons for the phenomenon. In order to determine exactly what the dolphins are dying of and assess their state of health, Russian scientists have started a three-year programme of study of the marine mammals of the Black Sea, said Vera Krasnova, Ph.D. (Biology), head of the expedition organised by the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS).

Krasnova stressed the uniqueness of the expedition. «Previously, the studies were focused on a narrow scope: they studied, for example, either the distribution and number of dolphins, or they only registered cases of dolphin beachings and tried to determine the causes of their death. Our expedition differs from the previous ones in that it is combined: we not only determine the distribution areas and the number of observed Black Sea dolphins, but also carry out photo-identification of individual animals, we study behaviour, we will carry out toxicological and genetic analyses of bodies found on shore, and other studies», she explained.

SPbU scientists create a drug for autoimmune diseases made of helminth derivatives

Scientists at St. Petersburg University develop a medicine based of helminth derivatives, that would help fight against autoimmune diseases, the press service of the university informed after the Academy on autoimmunity (SPBAA-2018) had been concluded.

«A molecule based on helminth worm derivatives is now being created. Helminths live in our body and do not want to kill it, they at the same time fight the immune system, not destroying but regulating it. Having observed this property, we <> managed to extract products of helminths that in the future would make it possible to create a medicine which modulates the immune system and helps fight against autoimmune diseases,» the press service quoted Professor Yehuda Shoenfeld, the head of the Laboratory of the Mosaic of Autoimmunity at St. Petersburg State University and the founder and head of The Zabludowicz Centre for Autoimmune Diseases.

The researchers believe that the drug will help cure more than 80 diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

«The researchers at the Institute of Psychology and Pedagogy of the Tyumen State University have analysed the international systems of adult education organisation and singled out common invariants. It turned out that currently the adult learner must take the lead in the learning process and the teacher gets the role of a mentor who controls the educational process to realise the personal and professional potential of students,» the message said.

It is noted that the educational process for adults at present time should be organised taking into account the continuity between the educational and professional areas. The training process moves to the workspace at an enterprise or to special training grounds.
