Scientists at Rosatom plan to create the first Russian gamma knife for nuclear medicine

The first Russian device for radiotherapy of malignant neoplasms, a gamma knife, is planned to be created by the scientists at the JSC 'Institute of Reactor Materials' (a part of the scientific division of Rosatom), together with colleagues from 'The Research Institute of Technical Physics and Automation' (RITPA, a part of Rosatom), and company 'Vector', as the Russian nuclear industry specialised publication 'Rosatom Country' informs.

Such gamma-knife installations has an error tolerance not exceeding 0.2 millimeters. Medical apparatuses based on linear accelerators, for example, a cyber knife, does not show such precision.

«The device will be cheaper than the foreign counterparts thanks to use of Russian components. It is possible to produce highly active cobalt-60 for the gamma knife using the reactors of Rosatom, and that will shorten the term of treatment. The scientists promise to create apparatuses more advanced than those offered by the competitors, as well as source positioning systems, automatic position control of irradiated area, and radiation dose management» the article says.
