Russian designers have created the world’s first aluminium aircraft engine
In order to increase the strength of aluminium, the scientists proposed to treat details of this metal with plasma discharges. As a result, corundum forms on the surface of aluminium, which is second only to diamond in hardness.
Tests of the new engine demonstrated that the use of aluminium instead of steel significantly reduces the weight of the engine — it became almost half as heavy compared to similar engines of the same power. It weights about 200 kg in running order. Engineers also managed to improve some other characteristics: for example, engine power increased by 40 horsepower, — up to 400 hp, — and fuel consumption decreased by 15%. The engine will run on ordinary AI-95 petrol. It also has an autonomous heating system.
