Tomsk scientists plan to start creating robot-bees in 2019

Scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) will launch a project in 2019 to create robotic 'bees', which will help solve the problem of pollination of crops grown in greenhouses. The developers plan to make the final version of robotic bees to be no more than the palm of a hand in size, said Alexei Yakovlev, the director of the Engineering School of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies of TPU.

«Next year we are going to make artificial bees — it will be a swarm of drones for pollination of plants, especially for strawberries which are grown year-round in greenhouses. We will develop the bees and also algorithms and control programmes for them, as well as optical systems and image recognition methods for accurate positioning. The prototypes will be rather large, so we strive to make them to be no more than a palm of a hand in size,» Yakovlev explained.

Rosatom will supply an isotope to Germany to create the new generation standard of mass

Rosatom will supply the isotope silicon-28 (28Si) to Germany in the fourth quarter of 2018, for the international scientific project 'Kilogram-3', needed for creation of the standard of mass of the new generation, the press service of the fuel company TVEL (a part of Rosatom) reported.

«In 2018, the „Production Association 'Electrochemical Plant'“ (JSC 'PA ECP', a part of TVEL) will complete the delivery of the isotope of polysilicon monoisotope silicon 28Si in the course of implementation of the international scientific project 'Kilogram-3', which aim is to create the standard of mass of the new generation. The last shipment to Germany of the stable isotope of silicon 28Si in the form of polycrystal is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018,» the message said.

The platinum-iridium standard kilogram, which was manufactured more than a hundred years ago and is now stored in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in the city of Sevres near Paris, is gradually losing weight. The new standard was created as a part of the project, in the form of a ball of an ideal spherical shape made of polycrystalline silicon enriched with the stable isotope 28Si, with a deviation from sphericity of less than 30 nm.

Siberian scientists developed a new technique for treating obesity in children

Tomsk scientists from the Siberian State Medical University (SibMed) have developed a method for diagnosing obesity and overweight in children and adolescents, which makes it possible to develop an individual treatment programme, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation informed.

The technique offered by SibMed includes three stages. The first one involves a detailed anamnesis and an analysis of the individual characteristics of the child.

On the second stage an evaluation of nutrition features is performed, using the 'Nutritest' programme developed by the Research Institute of Nutrition, Biotechnology, and Food Safety. In the course of the test, the child’s diet is analysed, the composition of food is determined, and the assessment is made of which substances are in excess in the body, and which are in deficiency. The bioimpedansometry (an analysis of the amount of fat and fluid in the body, muscle and bone mass and metabolism) is performed on the third stage, and also body composition (fat, water, muscles) is determined. An individual patient treatment programme is then developed based on the complex analysis and examination.

Siberian archaeologists will use wood for dating of the ancient settlement of Ust-Voykar in Yamal

The scientists at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography (IAE) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) will determine the age of constructions at Ust-Voykar, a site of ancient settlement, located in the Yamal Peninsula in the area of Arctic Circle, using analysis of annual rings of wood, Igor Slyusarenko, a senior researcher at the IAE SB RAS told the journalists.

«Work is underway to date [using annual wood rings analysis] the constructions at such an interesting site as ancient settlement of Ust-Voykarskoe. The settlement stands on permafrost, it is in fact a multi-layered 'pie' and there are 8 to 10 metres of occupation earth layers and a lot of remains of buildings. The wood there is very well preserved, which allows to order the occupation earth layers chronologically,» Slusarenko explained.
