«Skull bones and plates of the shell of the Mesozoic protostega (sea turtle) were found during the excavations. The length of the reptiles was between 2 and 3.5 metres,» the employee of the press service said to the journalist from the news agency.

Maxim Arkhangelsky, a palaeontologist and a senior lecturer at the STUoS explained that the finding is unique because earlier the skeleton remains of protostegi have been discovered in the US and Japan only. «The new data adds a significant amount of new information to the already available data about their range. The ancient giants possibly made seasonal migrations, like their contemporary brethren do,» Arkhangelsky said.
