Siberian scientists found a way to reduce number of traffic jams in the million-plus city

Krasnoyarsk scientists have developed a mathematical model of the transport network of Krasnoyarsk and used it to analyse street traffic in the city. The findings will help reduce the number of traffic jams in the city, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation informed.

«The calculations showed that if certain streets in the city are shut off, then the city transport network breaks into a number of practically unconnected areas. The results of the simulation could be used to reduce the number of traffic jams and traffic congestion. The study was published in the Journal of the Siberian Federal University. Mathematics and Physics,» the message from the Ministry said.

The Krasnoyarsk scientists came to a conclusion that the reason for frequent traffic jams is the low connectivity of the city’s street network. They believe that their model could make it possible to estimate the time of travel, to track the flow of cars, and in the future to optimise traffic by expanding the lanes, by prohibiting or allowing turns, and by improving the traffic lights.
