The dust from the Libyan Desert painted the snow on Krasnaya Polyana

Holidaymakers in the ski resort of Krasnaya Polyana saw the snow on the slopes turned yellow this morning. It was covered with dust, as it turned out, and the dust had been brought there by the wind from the Libyan desert.

«These are the consequences of the long-range transport of dust from North Africa, from the Libyan desert, to be more precise. A dust storm began around 11 UTC in Libya, then a dust cloud consisting of fine mineral particles (usually <10 microns) moved over the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey and finally, in the morning of March 23rd, reached the Black Sea and the Caucasus. Since the transport coincided with the movement of an atmospheric front, a fairly large amount of mineral particles fell down along with the precipitation,» says the Institute’s report, citing Stanislav Kutuzov, head of the Glaciology Laboratory at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
