Tomsk scientists investigate a substance for protection of brain tissue during a stroke
Experts at the Neuroprotection Mechanisms Laboratory of the Tomsk Polytechnic University in collaboration with colleagues from Tomsk Research Institute for Сardiology, E.E. Goldberg Research Institute of Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine, and the Siberian State Medical University (SibMed) are investigating a substance that could become the basis for medications for protection of brain tissues during a stroke, informed Dmitry Atochin, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the head of the Neuroprotection Mechanisms Laboratory.
«We have a very interesting compound [a chemical substance, a basis for creation of medications], which improves condition of animals after a stroke induced for experimental purposes,» Atochin said during the forum 'U-NOVUS 2018'.
He said that the substance is capable of protecting the brain tissue from ischemic damage associated with impaired blood circulation during strokes. The finished product could be created within a few years, the professor noted.
