Students who proposed navigation and communication projects in the Arctic won a hackathon at UrFU

Ural students and engineers who proposed new projects for the development of navigation, communications, waste processing, and a railway in the Arctic won the hackathon 'Robocon: Arctic Way', which ended at the Ural Federal University (UrFU, Yekaterinburg) on Thursday, reported the press service of the university.

Ilya Starodubtsev, one of the authors of the project, said that to solve the problem it is proposed to create a network of special stations providing continuous navigation. «The project is unique in that it uses mathematical analysis and modelling methods to optimise the network and reduce the number of repeaters,» the press service quoted Starodubtsev as saying.

Siberian scientists intend to develop a material to reduce the noise made during aircraft landing

Scientists from the Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute named after S.A. Chaplygin (SibNIA) develop a composite material capable of reducing the noise made during landing of an aircraft to a level of so called 'neighbourhood noise', i.e. to no more than 80 decibels. Such a technology is now being tested in the US, but Russian aircraft construction industry does not yet have such a material, said Alexei Ser’eznov, the academic director of SibNIA.

«We are talking about so-called adaptable or additive composite materials, which, without violating the integrity of a wing, will be able to create dome-shaped trailing-edge flaps and wing slats, and therefore to reduce aircraft landing noise to a level of a 'neighbourhood noise', not exceeding 80 decibels,» he said.

Ser’eznov explained that during landing of an aircraft, there are gaps between trailing-edge flaps, through which air penetrates at high speed and creates a strong noise. The new material will help to make such a wing, in which there will be no crevices between the flaps, and hence the noise level will be reduced by several times. Ser’eznov also clarified that such a material might be used in a real aircraft as early as next year.

Specialists pay special attention to several signet rings made of white metal and a copper alloy. On the flat bezels of the signet rings there are relief images with heraldic symbols and plant motifs. Others have inserts of glass and gray agate,» Alexei Yemelyanov, the head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the capital, is quoted by the portal as saying.

The message also points out that all the items were found near the building of the Armenian Embassy.

The participants of the CIPR-2018 conference at Innopolis have witnessed an experimental communication between two robots — 'Alice' and 'Gagarin'.

The male-robot «Gagarin», developed at Innopolis, got acquainted with the female-robot «Alisa» (Russan version of the name 'Alice'). He explained that he was named after a cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and asked if his vis-à-vis was free.

«The robot Gagarin has a list of emotions — surprise, joy, fear, disgust, and anger. Two robots communicated with each other, both have systems of face recognition and expression of emotions,» representatives of Innopolis said to TASS.

They also expressed an opinion that in the future robots endowed with emotions will be able to work in the service sector.
