Saint Petersburg researchers arranged polaritons in cell structure
Scientists from the ITMO University and University of Sheffield (UK) have obtained an analog of crystal cell of solid matter made of polaritons — hybrid quasiparticles appearing upon interaction of photons with elementary excitations of media. Herewith, the researchers have managed to reach the state when the energy of a particle does not depend on its velocity. The geometry of newly created polariton cell, the concentration of particles inside it, and general polarization properties can be controlled.
The researchers have not only succeeded in creating a space analog of atomic crystal cell made of polaritons, but also in investigating its properties. In particular, they have found out how the polaritons condense in flat areas, how their interactions break the symmetry of created crystal, and how spin and polarization properties evolve inside the structure.
