Russian physicists developed a pocket chemical analyser based on a laser pointer

Scientists from the Russian Quantum Centre (RCC), Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), and the Samsung Research Centre have created a pocket chemical analyser based on a conventional laser pointer. The compact device will become a replacement for expensive and more complex counterparts, the press service of MIPT informed.

"Physicists from the Russian Quantum Centre, MIPT, the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University, and Samsung Research Centre in Moscow have developed a method of cardinally narrowing the emission spectrum of conventional diode lasers (known for their use in laser pointers), which makes it possible to use them in place of expensive and complex single frequency laser devices," the message said .

The press service said that the invention opens up new opportunities for creating compact chemical analysers that are easily integrated into smartphones, as well as for production of cheap optical radars (lidars) for use in the fields of security and monitoring.
