Ejection of plasma from Sun atmosphere will influence on magnetic field of Earth on Thursday

The first in several months ejection of plasma from the solar atmosphere which took place on Monday will reach the magnetic field of the Earth by Thursday morning. Herewith, the probability of triggering a magnetic storm of first from five possible levels is about 35%, the website of the Laboratory of X-Ray Astronomy of the Sun at Lebedev Institute of Physics (LIP) of Russian Academy of Science announced on Tuesday.

The ejection of plasma from the solar atmosphere to the interplanetary space appeared early in the morning on February 12. «The ejection of plasma from the Sun is a quite rare phenomenon which as a rule has been observed after some global events only,» - researchers commented.

According to the astronomers from LIP, the ejection happened on Tuesday is quite weak but nevertheless will influence the Earth because of its direction almost parallel to the line connecting the Sun and the Earth. The flying matter will reach the magnetic field of our planet around 8:00 (UTC+3) on February 15. «At the moment of an impact with the magnetic field of the Earth, we forecast relatively pronounced perturbations of the magnetic field which will last about 8−10 hours,» - researchers noticed. They also added that the probability of inducing a magnetic storm of the first level is about 35%, while the second level storm might appear only with 10% probability.
