Scientists use drones to create an online map of archaeological sites in the Altai

Experts at Altai State University (AltSU) have started to create a cartographic online resource, where unique archaeological objects of the Altai Territory and the Altai Republic will be entered. It is the first time that such a science as well as popular science project in the Altai regions is being implemented with the use of drones, the press service of the university informs.

«The experts at the university create an online resource, where cartographic and other information about the most interesting archaeological monuments of the two Altai Mountains will be accessible. The work is on the list of initiative projects of Altai State University and it has received grant support from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The project is designed for three years with 700 thousand rubles of funding planned for the first year of works. The funding for the subsequent years will be determined by the results of the first year. The scientists create electronic archaeological highly detailed maps — unmanned aerial photography technologies are used for that,» a source at the university explained and noted that the resource will become usable by the end of 2018, and that it will then be supplemented when new studies provide new data.
