Historians determined the oldest document in the Arkhangelsk regional archive

Historians have found out that the oldest document in the state archives of the Arkhangelsk region dates back to the XIVth century — it is a parchment from the book «The Apostle Aprakos», said Vasily Trofimenko, the deputy director of the archive.

«The document in our archive has been found by a Novgorod historian. It is a parchment from the book „The Apostle Aprakos“, which was used as a cover for wrapping a monastic notebook, where the contributions made to the monasteries by various people were recorded. The notebook itself is dated to the XVIIth century, and the remains of „The Apostle Aprakos“ belong to the XIVth century. The document is the oldest in our archive,» the source said to the news agency.

The fragment found is written on a parchment. Trofimenko explained that this was a fortunate coincidence in some degree that the expert who worked with the document was also able to read what was written on the cover. «He looked carefully not only at the document itself, but at the cover as well — you need to have special qualification and have a general idea what you can find in this or that document,» Trofimenko said.
