Scientists established dates of thousand years old magnetic storms by annual tree rings

The international team of scientists with participation of members of Krasnoyarsk Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (KSC SB RAS) and Siberian Federal University (SFU) have managed to obtain data on magnetic storms which happened thousand years ago from annual tree rings; the results of the study are published in the journal Nature Communications, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation informed.

«The international research team, with the participation of scientists from FRC (Federal Research Centre) 'Krasnoyarsk Scientific Centre of the SB RAS' and SFU have managed to observe an increase in concentration of stable carbon isotopes in the annual rings of dozens of tree samples dating from 774 and 993 AD, brought from five continents. These dates coincide with historical evidence of unusually bright auroras. The discovery not only confirms the correctness of the dating of annual rings, but, in the long term, would allow to reveal the frequency of anomalous magnetic storms of the past,» the message said.
