Tomsk scientists intend to study running mice to find a new way to treat diabetes

Scientists at Tomsk State University (TSU) plan to find a new, non-pharmacological method for treating diabetes mellitus of second type by studying mice who suffer from diabetes and who are forced to «train» on a special treadmill, said Leonid Kapilevich, the head of the Department of Sport and Recreation Tourism, Physiology and Medicine of Sports at the Faculty of Physical Education at the TSU.

«We know that intensive physical activities help a person to fight diabetes, but why at the molecular level the muscles start again to consume glucose and remove it from the blood after training, we have no idea. To find an answer we will do an experiment on mice which we would keep on a special diet that leads to diabetes of the second type, and then train them for a month,» Kapilevich explained.

It will make it possible, the scientist believes, to understand what physical load it would be sensible to recommend to a person with diabetes and when it is better to do exercises in order for a person’s body to 'turn on' the necessary regulatory mechanisms.
