The third cluster of a neutrino detector was installed in Baikal, to study the universe

Scientists of the international collaboration 'Baikal' have completed the installation of the third cluster of Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope in the waters of the lake and incorporated it into a single system together with the previously installed clusters, the press service of the Irkutsk State University (ISU) reported on Wednesday.

The telescope consists of independent structural units, called clusters. Each of the clusters consists of 288 optical detectors connected as eight garlands, which are immersed at the bottom of the lake.

It is assumed that the first stage of construction of a neutrino telescope will be completed in 2021. The next stage will include the deployment of 27 clusters, but the issues of further financing and the timing of the completion of the project are still open.

The scientists believe that large deep-water neutrino telescopes, provided they reach certain size, would open the era of neutrino astronomy, which involves studying the structure and processes of the universe at incredibly huge distances.
