Archaeologists found a piece of rock crystal in Altai, which Neanderthals considered an ornament

Scientists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography (IAE) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have found a piece of rock crystal in the Chagyr cave in the territory of Altai Krai where there was a Neanderthal site. The piece was probably used for aesthetic purposes. Ksenia Kolobova, a professor at the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Doctor of Historical Sciences, told reporters that the finding tells us that cognitive abilities of the Neanderthals were developing.

«We have found the small piece of rock crystal in the occupation earth layers in the Chagyr cave, which was brought from the outside. No traces of use were found on it, and yet it had been intentionally broken off. The Neanderthals brought a very beautiful crystal to the cave and did not use it. So we could be talking about their cognitive abilities expanding: they liked something beautiful, and they purposefully brought it, we could even talk about the sense of beauty in Neanderthals,» Kolobova said.

It has been considered 'common knowledge' that Neanderthals were alien to aesthetics and they did not make art, Kolobova explained.
