Expert: a multi-qubit quantum computer can be created in Russia in a year

A prototype of a 50-qubit quantum computer can be created in Russia within a year given the support promised by Vnesheconombank (VEB), Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects (FARP), and VEB Innovation, said Jacob Biamonte, Professor at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech).

«The groups involved in the project have enough resources, and with this support a prototype processor of this size can be built within a year. Then the prototype of the quantum processor can be improved,» said Tass Biamonte, who heads the group for the development of machine learning algorithms based on the principles of quantum physics at Skoltech, in an interview to TASS.

50 qubits is the threshold at which, it is expected, the capabilities of a quantum computer will surpass those of a «classical» one, he believes. Such equipment, Biamonte explained, could help conduct serious research, for example, in quantum chemistry and biotechnology. The Biamonte group, in particular, would be interested in using such a processor to implement accelerated algorithms of deep machine learning based on the principles of quantum physics.
