Scientists found that melting of permafrost creates conditions for growth of larch

Melting of permafrost because of warming of the climate increases the amount of mineral nutrients available to larch, and with time it could lead to spread of larch in the permafrost zone in Central Siberia. This is the conclusion the group of scientists from Russia (Krasnoyarsk), Switzerland, France, and the United States came to, the official publication of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) reported on Thursday.

«Scientists of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Centre of the SB RAS, together with colleagues from the Siberian Federal University, Switzerland, France, and the US, have discovered that the degradation of permafrost caused by the warming increases the amount of mineral nutrients available to larch. The researchers predict that this will cause growth of biomass and tree productivity in the permafrost zone of Central Siberia,» the newspaper reports. The results are published in the journal Forests.
