Scientists to study characteristics of kids' sleep in the Arctic and to develop ways to improve it

Scientists from the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) will conduct a study of children’s sleep in the Arctic in 2018. Recommendations will then be made based on the results of the project, for adjusting the regime of the day and school hours for children living in the Far North, said Sergei Kolomeichuk, the manager of the project.

The scientist explained that desynchronization leads to lack of sleep, affects perception of information, as well as causes overeating, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular diseases.

«We will develop recommendations for non-drug-related sleep correction, based of the data obtained; for example, to shift the beginning of school hours to a later time during the second half of a school year. And we will recommend that the authorities follow the recommendations and conduct a pilot project,» Kolomeichuk added.
