«The key project of the World Meteorological Organisation initiative called Year of Polar Forecasting is the pan-Arctic expedition MOSAiC. Representatives of the entire global Arctic community will take part in it — this is really the project of the decade, at least judging by its scientific potential. It is an expensive project so we are thinking about sending just two or three members for now,» Makarov explained.

The results of the expedition will contribute to a better understanding of regional and global consequences of the climate change in the Arctic and of the reduction of the sea ice cover, as well as to better weather forecasts.
