The Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk will become an integration centre for ITER members

The Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) will become the integration centre for foreign members of the ITER project (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) — elements of components manufactured in different countries will be assembled and tested at the Institute, informed Anatoly Krasilnikov, the director of ITER-Russia.

«Major works on the manufacture of the port-plag begin now, as well as the purchase of materials and components. Our foreign partners will send to the INP SB RAS the components that are to be installed inside the port-plag. The function of the institute is to integrate all these into a single system and test it. So, the INP will become the integration centre for the foreign participants of ITER in that sense,» Krasilnikov said.

The purpose of the ITER project is to demonstrate the possibility of using thermonuclear energy on an industrial scale. ITER is comparable in scale with the Large Hadron Collider and the International Space Station. The Institute of Nuclear Physics of the SB RAS will produce the port-plugs for ITER — 45 ton plugs for stopping the neutron flux from escaping from the active zone of the main element of the thermonuclear reactor, tokamak, that is, to protect against neutron radiation.
