RFBR plans to increase funding for Arctic research in 2018 by 20%

The Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) plans to announce a specialised call for grant applications for Arctic research projects for 2018, the amount of which might be increased by 20%.

«It is projected that in 2018 the amount of funding for Arctic research will increase by 20%,» the spokesperson of RFBR said.

Professor Vladimir Zhmur, head of the Department of Competitive Projects in Geosciences, said that scientists received grants worth about 100 million rubles for research in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation via the department in 2017.

«The main research of the Arctic is carried out by the Earth Sciences and Biology Sciences departments, including research of the northern seas to the east of Novaya Zemlya on ships of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The scientists measure currents, temperatures, water salinity and ice boundaries,» he said.
