Tomsk scientists to determine pollution levels of the Kara and Black seas with the help of plankton
«The traditional method of assessing the state of a water area involves using a contact method: plankton is collected using nets and then examined under a microscope. Our development is unique in that it is based on an integrated approach and in that we examine plankton in its natural environment, without harming it. <> The device allows to study trajectory and speed of plankton movements, as well as to record its species diversity. These indicators allows to assess the ecological state of a water area. For example, under the influence of harmful substances, plankton <> becomes slower,» explained Aleksey Olshukov, deputy head of the Laboratory for Radiophysical and Optical Methods of Environmental Research.
