A child bionic hand prosthesis created in Veliky Novgorod

The research company 'Tehbionik' based in Veliky Novgorod has created a child modular prosthetic arm, the likes of which are not produced in Russia. The sample works on bioelectrical muscle signals and performs several types of grabs and grasps, said Vladimir Novikov, a biomechanical engineer and a member of the All-Russian prosthetist and orthopedist guild.

«In Russia, of course, there are not that many such children [with the defects of the upper limbs], but there is really nothing produced for them in the country. There are cosmetic prostheses, but they are non-functional. The prosthesis developed in Veliky Novgorod performs a grasp, it opens the hand, and the modularity makes it possible to select a prosthesis individually in each case,» explained Novikov. He added that unlike traction prostheses, which function only because of additional movements, the Veliky Novgorod development is activated by electrical signals that come from the muscles.

«The prosthesis can act, for example, like a tweezers with the use of the middle and index fingers and a thumb, or the forceps — when all the fingers are tightened together. And an important difference from the counterparts — our development can adapt the grasp to the shape of the object,» Novikov said.
