Scientists intend to find out where the ancient Greeks brought silver to the Crimea and Taman from

Scientists from the Fanagorian archaeological expedition are going to determine the composition of an alloy which certain ancient silver coins are made of, in order to understand where silver for their manufacture had been brought from. The coins in question were minted in the territory of the present-day Crimea and the Krasnodar Territory, informed Mikhail Abramzon, the director of the Research Institute of Historical Anthropology and Philology of the Magnitogorsk State Technical University.

He explained that there were no silver mines in the territory of the present-day Crimea, Kuban, and the Rostov region, where the ancient Bosporan kingdom used to be. However, coins, including silver coins, were minted in the kingdom.

«Where the silver was brought from, we do not know with certainty; there are hypotheses that it was delivered from the Balkans or from Asia Minor, but there is no evidence to support any of these assumptions. It is necessary to carry out research, including isotope analysis, because every silver has its own unique spectrum, it contains lead and other elements, and after finding out the composition, it would be possible to understand what deposits it came from. We have planned to conduct the analysis next year,» Abramzon said.
