Tomsk physicists create software that minimises GPS interference caused by the Northern Lights

Scientists at Tomsk State University (TSU) take part in the preparation of an orbital experiment, part of which would be creation of a 3D model of the passage of signals from navigation satellites through the Earth’s ionosphere, which will help to overcome GPS and GLONASS interference caused by the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), the press service of the university reported.

«Tomsk physicists are developing software for a space experiment that will make it possible to find out what is preventing the propagation of satellite signals in the disturbed ionosphere of the Earth during solar activity. In particular, the study will help explain and eventually eliminate the cause of synchronisation failures as well as loss and distortion of signals of navigation satellites such as GPS and GLONASS set above the North and South poles of the planet,» the source said.
