Russian scientists discovered a giant system of gas clouds around the galaxy Mrk 6
Scientists at The Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) have studied the distribution and movement of gas in the galaxy Mrk 6 using Russia's largest telescope, and discovered for the first time a giant system of clouds stretching far beyond the galaxy, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation informed.
"The scientists of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the RussianAcademy of Sciences (SAO) studied the distribution and movement of gas in the galaxy Mrk 6 using Russia's largest telescope. It was one of the first active galaxies they discovered and it became a classical object of research, however, the features of its external structure have not yet been studied. So, a giant system of clouds of ionised gas was discovered for the first time, which stretches far beyond the galaxy," the message said.
Mrk 6 belongs to the class of galaxies with a nucleus with a large amount of ultraviolet radiation. It is located about 263 million light years from Earth. Soviet astronomer Veniamin Markarian was the first to pay attention to it in the 1960s. And although studies of its characteristics have been being conducted since then, the focus was only on the central area, while the external structure remained unexplored.
