Scientists proposed to transport gas from the permafrost regions using new technology
Specialists at the Institute of Earth Cryosphere of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are researching the possibility of using so called «dry water» to transport gas from the permafrost regions in a solid form, a hydrate, i.e. a crystalline compound of water and gas. It will allow to save money on transportation and to stop the expensive construction of gas pipelines to small deposits, said Nadezhda Molokitina, senior researcher at the Institute.
«There are a number of problems preventing the use of gas hydrate technologies on industrial scale, one of which is the low growth rate of gas hydrates (crystalline compounds of water and gas). To solve this problem, scientists suggested using a system of 'dry water' - a powdered disperse system — instead of ground ice, water with surfactants, its predecessors,» Molokitina said.
