Russia has dropped from the 9th place occupied in the early 2000s to the 13th in 2017 by the total number of scientific publications indexed by the database of scientific journals Web of Science. Yevgeny Onishenko, deputy chairman of the Trade Union of Workers of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) announced this at a press conference in Moscow.

The 'May decree' of President Vladimir Putin stipulates that by 2024 Russia should become one of the top five of the world’s countries that carry out scientific research and development in areas determined by the priorities of scientific and technological development. One of the indicators is the number of publications in the scientific journals indexed by the Web of Science database.

«There is no reason to believe that, given the planned parameters of the national project for science, Russia will be able to get into even the top ten in 2024 calculated by the overall level of publication activity,» Onishchenko pointed out.

The only area in which Russia is in the top five is physics and mathematics.
