Tyumen scientists invented floating station for capturing fresh water from the air

Researchers from the Tyumen Industrial University (TIU) have developed a prototype of a floating facility for obtaining pure fresh water from the air using renewable energy sources — solar light and wind. The technology will be tested in 2018 on a water reservoir in Tyumen region.

«We have suggested extracting water from the air which is already saturated with moisture using solar and wind energy and a special device. We are planning to test it in summer 2018 on Tyumen water pond to make observations and come to some intermediate conclusions,» - professor at the Chair of Water Supply and Water Discharge TIU Viktor Mironov said.

According to Mironov, the new facility is a buoy which should be placed in the sea water area. «Inside the device, there is a thin layer of seawater which can absorb solar energy. The water becomes warm, the air over it is saturated with moisture. Further, the air is transmitted to a condenser situated below the sea level where the water is recollected. Herewith, the obtained water does not require additional purification,» - Mironov said.

The press-office of TIU also has mentioned that the technology can be applied not only for the demineralization of seawater but also obtaining water of drinking quality from freshwater pond with polluted water.
