A group of Russian scientists has compiled the first comprehensive atlas of the White Sea and its catchment area, and is now seeking funding to have it printed, said Alexei Tolstikov, the acting head of the Laboratory of Geography and Hydrology at the Northern Water Problems Institute of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

«For three years have we worked on drawing up the first comprehensive atlas of the White Sea and its catchment area. There were previously mainly thematic atlases, for example, of invertebrates of the White Sea or of natural resources, and they have almost never touched upon the information on the catchment area. Our atlas already exists in electronic form, and we now plan to publish a paper version of the atlas. The paste-up layout has already been prepared, the search for funding is now underway,» Alexey Tolstikov said.

The atlas was compiled taking into account new data on the White Sea, which were obtained during the expeditions. It contains general information on the water body and its watershed, as well as on geological structure, climate, biological resources of the sea, and social and economic characteristics of the specific territories in the catchment area, Tolstikov explained.
