A crippled falcon has got its leg back thanks to 3D printing

Experts of three technological startups of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programmes of JSC Rusnano have made a prosthesis for the mutilated falcon using 3D printing. Its draft and technical design specifications were made for the «pressmen» by Novosibirsk experts who engineer unmanned aerial vehicles, and part of the details of the prosthesis was «cast» in St. Petersburg, says the press release which was sent to the editorial office.

The falcon had got run over by wheels of a car and was badly wounded. After the accident, he was cared for at the Centre for Rehabilitation of Birds of Prey. Veterinarians managed to save the bird’s life, but it lost its right leg.

Designers of drones created a draft of the prosthesis, which consists of several parts with a movable joints. As of now the falcon has nearly become accustomed to the «plastic leg». Its movements became steady and the asymmetry of the body disappeared.
