«The RSF has succeeded, and this was a feat of the people who created the foundation, to break our bad old Russian tradition of distributing grants to friends and acquaintances and to favour transparent and professional review process. The RSF is actually a sort of an icebreaker that changes traditions in our scientific society for the better», Oganov said.

It was reported earlier that the RNF plans to distribute grants in the amount of 22 billion rubles in 2018. Along with such traditional for Russia branches of science as elementary particles and high energy physics, a significant proportion of projects funded by the RSF pertains to life sciences: more than 25% of the grants were given for research in the fields of biology, agriculture, and fundamental medicine. 16 billion rubles were allocated for grants last year.

New algorithms will be being developed as well to solve specific problems, he explained. «Without adequate mathematics, a quantum computer will not have any practical significance. The creation of quantum algorithms will let us talk about a fundamentally different quality of solving problems of great computational complexity such as modelling human intellectual abilities, optimal distribution of transport and logistic flows, weather forecasting, and so forth,» Garbuk told Izvestia.

Vnesheconombank, Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects, VEB Innovation, the Moscow State University, and the ANPO «Digital Economy» signed an agreement on the creation of a 50-qubit quantum computer on February 15 during the Russian investment forum Sochi-2018.
