Expeditions to Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land from the «Russian Arctic» to start in the summer

Experts of the Russian Arctic National Park are getting ready for expeditions to Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land. Both expeditions is scheduled to start in the summer of 2018. There they will continue the studies that have already begun during the previous seasons, for the most part, in particular the observation of individual species of mammals and birds in two archipelagoes, Ivan Mizin, the deputy director for research at the national park, said.

«There will be expeditions in the summer. The works are planned to be carried out both on Novaya Zemlya and on Franz Josef Land — there are different tasks to be accomplished at each of the sites. In terms of the number of specialists involved, these expeditions will surpass the one [of four people] that has just returned from Franz Josef Land many times over,» Mizin said, without giving the exact number of participants.

The expeditions will help replenish the database of monitoring of key species of marine mammals; it will also provide materials on geological characteristics of the islands of Franz Josef Land, assessment data of the impact of climate change on Arctic ecosystems, data on the presence of chemical pollutants in living organisms that inhabit the national park. The expeditions will involve more than 20 specialists of the Russian Arctic, as well as experts from Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Arkhangelsk region, and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.
