Russian archaeologists plan to conduct excavations in Palmyra after the restoration of Tadmor

Russian archaeologists hope to continue archaeological excavations in Palmyra after the restoration of the modern Syrian city of Tadmor, since the monument is located there, informed Natalya Solovyova, the Deputy Director of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IHMC RAS). She presented a 3D model of Palmyra monuments on Friday during the festival «Ancient Heritage of Russia» in Krasnodar.

«We hope that we will be able to conduct some more archaeological excavations there, because our institute had reached an agreement with the Syrian authorities on these excavations in the spring of 2015, just a few days before the hostilities began. But we did not sign the documents — the fighting began. We do hope that after modern Tadmor is restored, it will be possible to come there again and continue the works,» Solovyova said.

Russian specialists also intend to take part in the restoration of the monuments of Palmyra, said Solovyova.
