A Russian developed method for increasing the hardness of steel uses a laser and «nano-soot»

Russian scientists have developed a technology that allows to increase the hardness of steel by five times. The technology is based on a use of a laser and nanomaterial, a special carbon soot, the press service of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Centre (KSC) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) reported.

«The team of scientists <> has developed a technology to increase the surface hardness and wear resistance of steel products. Laser processing and creation of surface layers strengthened by nanocarbon materials increases the hardness of the modified material by more than five times compared to the most widespread technical steel,» the KSC reported.

«The hardness and wear resistance of steels, especially those containing carbon, nitrogen or boron compounds, are significantly improved after laser treatment. Additionally, laser heating does not cause deformation of the products, which simplifies the technological process, since there is no need for additional processing of metal products,» Alexander Eletsky, the representative of the team of scientists and a member of the National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute», was quoted as saying in the KSC’s info.
